And now all her love is wasted

I was playing one of my favourite songs of all time: Skinny Love by Bon Iver. As I was singing the lyrics I realized that the meaning to me it had changed. And the suddenly I started looking up for the true meaning of skinny love… I never really understood (as english is not my first language, and even if it was there is some complexity)…

So I never really understood, I thought it was about someone who loved and was not being told about the feeling in return in return it made me sad and in some ways I would sing it to someone so special, because he would never tell me how he felt or if he even felt the same way. Thats how I felt the song. But now I realize it is about not feeling the same way, sort of…

You see there are two meanings you can give to a skinny love…

There are two ways to define ‘Skinny Love’, but both talk about romantic relationships.
The first is used to describe a type of relationship between two people that are very in love with each other, or are crushing big time on the other; but are far to embarrassed to express their feelings. The relationship is ‘skinny’ because they have yet to come out and explain their true feelings. There is no communication, there for it’s not even really a ‘relationship’.
The second is to describe a similar thing, but instead of no communication, the relationship lacks love. It is where two people are dating just for the sake of dating, the sake of being with someone. To fill that empty void, to give them something to do. They do not actually love each other.
The funny thing here is that the same person I would “sing” this song to or thing about every time I would listen to this song fell into a Skinny Love relationship with his significan other… He was with her just because… and the it hit me…
Sullen load is full; so slow on the split” …

He failed her.
“And now all your love is wasted
And then who the hell was I?
And I’m breaking at the britches
And at the end of all your lines
Who will love you?
Who will fight?
Who will fall far behind?”
